THE SELF-ACTUALISATION FRAMEWORK
Close the gap between who you are and who you can become.
CARL ROGERS, SIMPLY PUT
Self-actualisation is the lifelong process of becoming more fully yourself — not becoming perfect.
Rogers believed every person has both a real self and an ideal self. Your real self is how you live now: your choices, habits, relationships, and sense of self. Your ideal self is the person you genuinely want to be, shaped by your values and aspirations. When the two feel far apart, that gap is called incongruence — and it can feel like inner conflict, dissatisfaction, or being out of step with your own life. The work is not to erase who you are. It is to understand yourself honestly, make choices that reflect what matters, and slowly bring your daily life closer to your authentic direction. As the gap narrows, you experience more congruence: greater alignment, authenticity, and inner peace. The models below show that movement in three simple stages.
01 / INCONGRUENCE
The gap is wide.
